Why You Should Master The
Skill Of Being Present

We often focus on goals and detailed plans, but motivation can fade. Learning to stay present helps us focus on what matters now.

When you set a goal, you feel extremely excited to pursue it. You tell yourself that you will stay focused and won't give up no matter what. However, as time goes by, your life circumstances change, and so do your interests and personality. You may realize that you no longer want something you thought you wanted.

You may find yourself confused about whether you actually want to pursue a particular goal.

On one hand, you do not want to let go of the goal because you promised yourself you won't give up. On the other, you find it difficult to make progress because you're not as determined to achieve the goal as you were at the beginning of your journey.

Not knowing the right thing to do, you feel stuck. You try to look at things objectively and find the reasons for the loss of motivation and drive.

"Maybe I'm being lazy."

"Maybe I don't have a good plan in place."

"Maybe I should change the way I'm pursuing the goal."

Such thoughts might be true.

But even after exploring these potential reasons, you still feel that you are no longer interested in pursuing a particular goal. It's totally okay to let go and pursue another worthwhile goal.

Here are some reasons why it is okay to change goals.

1. Your Priorities Will Change Over Time

Look at your goal realistically. Is it feasible to pursue this goal? Compare your present circumstances to the time when you had set your goal. What has changed?

You may now have added responsibilities. You may have a new relationship. Or you may simply want to achieve new things and, as a result, you might be unable to work on your current goals.

And, that's okay.

Your priorities change with time and you must modify or change your goals to align them with your priorities.

REMEMBER

Changing your goal does not mean that you have failed. Sometimes changing direction is necessary when your priorities change.

2. The Process Should Be Enjoyable and Satisfying

If you're not completely sure about your goals, you will find it hard to stay motivated and put in the work.

If you don't put in the work, you won't be able to make any progress in your journey. As a result, you will end up in a vicious cycle of guilt and disappointment.

Staying consistent and motivated becomes a whole lot easier when you are truly passionate about the goal you're pursuing.

"A meaningful goal should give you a reason to keep moving forward."

3. There Isn't Only One Way to Become Better

We all set goals to become a better version of ourselves and improve our lives. But remember that there isn't only one way of achieving this ultimate goal.

You can find many different ways of becoming more self-aware, improving your life and creating happiness.

Let go of the things that weigh you down. Pursue new interests and make time for things that provide you fulfillment.

4. It's Better to Move On With Better Goals Than Stay Stuck

Unnecessarily pressurizing yourself to pursue a goal you no longer feel strongly about is only going to leave you feeling drained.

You will be wasting your time and energy. There's no point in beating yourself up and worrying about what could have been.

Instead, focus on what you need right now. Work towards goals that align with your new priorities and the person you are becoming.

"You are allowed to change direction when your goals no longer reflect who you are."

Your goals are supposed to support your growth, not trap you in a version of yourself that no longer exists.

Life changes. You change. Your priorities change. And your goals are allowed to change too.
